Characterization is the act of creating and describing characters in the work of literature. Characterization includes both descriptions of a character’s physical attributes as well as the character’s personality. The way that characters act, think, and speak also adds to their characterization. The purpose of characterization in acting is to accurately interpret the writer’s character and Director Seun Afolabi (storyteller) goes a long way to express his thoughts on characterization for an actor as he addressed actor in a Masterclass with Acecasting.

One of the key things he explained in clear details is the act of following the story. He establishes how that the journey of a character is story and every character is story driven. “If you must truly understand a character, pay close attention to the story”. Seun goes ahead to advice that actors should ask themselves Why the character needs what he needs, when does he need it, what does he even need, how does he want to get it. He says the “why, what, when, what and how” are questions that actors should ask when analyzing a character and having answered this question you can fully come to an understanding of the person of the character.
In summary, the story is the soul of a character and it shouldn’t be approached differently when working on a beautiful character.
