As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming performance of “The Marriage of Anansewa” on August 24, 2024, I find it essential to reflect on the powerful impact of the team’s previous production, “Recyclable Chairs,” which was staged on July 20. This earlier work left a lasting impression on me, and it serves as a testament to the creative brilliance and social commitment of the team behind it, led by the visionary director, Alao Toyyib Ayobami (Taiyoung).

“Recyclable Chairs” was not just a play; it was an awakening. With a cast of exceptional talent, including Acecasting’s own Martins Ibikunle, the production delved deep into the heart of societal issues that plague our nation. The play served as a powerful critique of corruption and the cyclical nature of political power—a “recyclable chair” that continues to exclude the younger generation from leadership.
I had the privilege of speaking with the director, Alao Toyyib Ayobami (Taiyoung) about his vision for “Recyclable Chairs.” He shared with me a poignant observation: “Since I’ve been young, I’ve been told about the young ones being the future leaders, and in my 30 years of existence, I’ve not seen the younger generation become leaders. The seat has been a recyclable chair. The seat of the politicians has not been open enough for the ‘future leader.’ The youths have no major impact in the state of the country in leadership.”
Taiyoung’s words resonated deeply with the play’s theme. The message was clear: true change can only come when the youth rise with dedication to challenge the status quo. “Recyclable Chairs” wasn’t merely a story; it was a call to action, urging the audience to recognize their power and responsibility in shaping the future of our society.
One of the highlights of the evening was a conversation with Twinkle, a renowned event host and actor, who had also starred in a previous version of “Recyclable Chairs.” His insights into the play were compelling. He praised the director’s ability to reimagine the narrative in a way that was both relevant and impactful. Twinkle expressed his hope that not only the general public but also our leaders would take notice of the play’s urgent message: “As a country, we are at the point where what we need right now is a revolution, and people have to come together to tell the government they are not doing well. Everyone, as citizens, should pick up their responsibilities and speak out.”
This sentiment echoed throughout the play, with characters like Amandi, portrayed by Martins Ibikunle, who has long been one of the most talented actors in our agency (AcecastingNg), and his performance in “Recyclable Chairs” solidified his reputation as a force to be reckoned with.
His ability to bring depth and nuance to his character was nothing short of remarkable. His character embodied the moral courage and resolve needed to break free from the corrupt legacies of his predecessors. Amandi’s struggle to remain principled in the face of familial corruption, spoke volumes about the potential for a new generation to redefine our society’s future.

As I reflect on “Recyclable Chairs,” I can’t help but be excited about what this talented team will bring to the stage with “The Marriage of Anansewa.” If “Recyclable Chairs” is any indication, we are in for a performance that not only entertains but also challenges us to think critically about our roles as citizens.
“The Marriage of Anansewa” produced by Ejiro Oghene “Jyro” Asagba, promises to be more than just a theatrical event; it is an opportunity to engage with the pressing issues of our time through the lens of art.
I urge everyone to attend this upcoming performance on August 24, 2024. The team has proven their ability to deliver a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant experience, and this next production is sure to be no exception.

Be there to witness the magic of theater that not only reflects our society but also inspires us to be the change we wish to see. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be another unforgettable production by this remarkable team.
